Google “sapurina” Android hakerus

Šajās dienās visa Android komūna runā par to kā Google nosūtījusi (cease and desist) vēstuli populārākās Android modifikācijas Cyanogen Mod (vismaz 30 000 lietotāju) autoram pieprasot pārtraukt viņa darbību. Problēma ir tajā, ka Cyanogen autors izstrādājot savu Android ROM versiju, tajā iekļāvis Google veidotās Android aplikācijas (piemēram, Gmail, Google Maps un citu Google servisu sinhronizācijas rīki), kas pēc Google domām neietilpst open source ietvaros un ir pretlikumīgs. Taču ir kāda maza nianse, Android bez šīm Google aplikācijām ir diezgan bezjēdzīgs un tāpēc šāds Google gājiens ir gana nozīmīgs un tas ieviesīs pamatīgas izmaiņas Android izstrādātāju komūnā.
Arī Google ir nākusi ar paziņojumu šajā sakarā:
Everyone knows that mobile is a big deal, but for a long time it was hard to be a mobile app developer. Competing interests and the slow pace of platform innovation made it hard to create innovative apps. For our part, Google offers a lot of services — such as Google Search, Google Maps, and so on — and we found delivering those services to users’ phones to be a very frustrating experience. But we also found that we weren’t alone, so we formed the Open Handset Alliance, a group of like-minded partners, and created Android to be the platform that we all wished we had. To encourage broad adoption, we arranged for Android to be open-source. Google also created and operates Android Market as a service for developers to distribute their apps to Android users. In other words, we created Android because the industry needed an injection of openness. Today, we’re thrilled to see all the enthusiasm that developers, users, and others in the mobile industry have shown toward Android.
With a high-quality open platform in hand, we then returned to our goal of making our services available on users’ phones. That’s why we developed Android apps for many of our services like YouTube, Gmail, Google Voice, and so on. These apps are Google’s way of benefiting from Android in the same way that any other developer can, but the apps are not part of the Android platform itself. We make some of these apps available to users of any Android-powered device via Android Market, and others are pre-installed on some phones through business deals. Either way, these apps aren’t open source, and that’s why they aren’t included in the Android source code repository. Unauthorized distribution of this software harms us just like it would any other business, even if it’s done with the best of intentions.
Šāda Google darbība liek aizdomāties par patieso Android platformas atvērtumu un tikai norāda, ka tas ir tāds pats bizness kā daudzi citi. Ja Google (vai arī Open Headset Alliance) arī turpmāk vēlas iekasēt naudu no saviem sadarbības partneriem par Android iekļaušanu savās ierīcēs, tad jātiek skaidrībā ar Android hakeriem, kas neviena nekontrolēti savos ROM iekļauj visu kas pagadās. Android modificētie ROM noteikti būs arī turpmāk, taču tagad tie būs “pagrīdes” varianti, kas noteikti radīs gana daudz problēmu. Iesaku ar interesi sekot līdzi notikumiem..

There are lots of things we can do as end-users and modders, though, without violating anyones rights. Most importantly, we are entitled to back up our software. Since I don’t work with any of these closed source applications directly, what I intend to do is simply ship the next version of CyanogenMod as a “bare bones” ROM. You’ll be able to make calls, MMS, take photos, etc. In order to get our beloved Google sync and applications back, you’ll need to make a backup first. I’m working on an application that will do this for you.
The idea is that you’ll be able to Google-ify your CyanogenMod installation, with the applications and files that shipped on YOUR device already. Or, you can just use the basic ROM if you want. It will be perfectly functional if you don’t use the Google parts. I will include an alternative app store (SlideMe, or AndAppStore, not decided yet) with the basic ROM so that you can get your applications in case you don’t have a Google Experience device.

Lai arī viņu paustais iet kopā ar open-source pēc definīcijas (lai gan varētu vēl par to pastrīdēties), tomēr darvas pili google iemeta manā android platformas medus mucā. Tāpēc esmu “free software” termina piekritējs, jo atklātais kods ne vienmēr ir “pietiekoši atklāts”. taču tas nemaina manu vēlmi mest pie malas iphone ;)
